More matter with less art.
People in my Shakespeare on Film class find Jean Simmons as Ophelia dreadful, while I actually like her performance. What is your opinion?

I think Jean Simmons’ Ophelia is absolutely amazing, and I especially enjoy her interactions with Hamlet. I mean, Laurence Olivier has a very strong presence on screen and you’d think that would be difficult to match, but I think Simmons’ actually outdoes him. (The nunnery scene!)

Although I do also have some sympathy for people who don’t like her Ophelia, or the 1948 adaptation in general. The acting style is slightly dated, which might make some people feel disengaged. I love it, but I don’t know, maybe it’s an acquired taste?

(Sorry you had to wait for a reply so long! I’m having a busy month.)
